Stephane Grappelli - Vintage 1981 and Live at the Winery

Violin jazz is like a step child in jazz scene but few have come close to the statue of Stephane Grappelli. I got these two albums just before my surgery knowing that I'll be bed-bounded and eye-free activities for few days, these two albums Vintage and Live at The Winery help me get through the day faster.

Live at The Winery is a live session in a quartet with the guitars of John Etheridge and Martin Taylor and bassist Jack Sewing. The music, although a bit predictable, is enjoyable, for Grappelli has never lost his enthusiasm for playing swinging jazz. He performs "Let's Fall in Love" and "Love for Sale" as if he had just discovered those songs.

Vintage , guitarist Mike Gari is replacing John Etheridge and it's steadily swinging, The quartet even covers Stevie Wonder tune, "Isn't She Lovely," proving the pop musicians are still capable of writing jazz-worthy songs. Jamie is Mike Gari's original and it's a sentimental tune really hits the sweet spot. Maybe the most enduring quality of these two albums is Grappelli and company's ability to infuse a vibrant joy into everything they play. This leaves one with the impression of a bunch of guys doing what they do best and having a good time doing it. One should also note the excellent work of bassist Jack Sewing who adds depth and drive to both sets. Live at the Winery & Vintage Grappelli offers an hour and a half of joyful jazz and shouldn't be missed.
